“Understanding Who God Is”

Lesson 3

John 1:1-14“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” KJV

Are you glad you’re a son of God? Let’s talk some more about this great God. Let’s compare some scriptures proving that The Father and The Son are one and the same God.

I think if the only scripture we had to share on this subject was Isaiah 9:6, that would be all we would need to share.

Isaiah 9:6 - “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” KJV

Let’s look at this same scripture in the “Complete Jewish Bible:”

“For a child is born to us, a son is given to us; dominion will rest on his shoulders, and he will be given the name Pele-Yo'etz El Gibbor Avi-'Ad Sar-Shalom [Wonder of a Counselor, Mighty God, Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace].”

Wow, that Complete Jewish Bible really says it, “Father of Eternity”. How about this- “…dominion will rest on his shoulders…” If the dominion is resting on His shoulders that means He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Revelation 22:1-3 - “And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him.” KJV

In the first verse it could appear to a Trinitarian, that these are two people: God, and the Lamb. Notice then the very last line in verse 3 where it says “…but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him.”

If God and the Lamb were two different people, wouldn’t is say “…and his servants shall serve them.”? No, it says “him”. Meaning, God and the Lamb are one person; Father-God, Lamb-Jesus. Jesus was God manifest in the flesh and here He is. It is the throne of God and the Lamb, as one throne and one person.

Notice Revelation 4:2“And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.” KJV

Not two, not three, not twelve…but One. He also didn’t see a dove flying around either, by the way.

Notice Revelation 22:16 - “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.” KJV

That’s another way of expressing both Father and the Son in the same person. As Father, He is the root of David. As son, He’s the offspring of David-another way of saying Alpha and Omega. He was before David and after David. In the Spirit, He was the root, in the flesh He was the offspring. It’s the same person.

Notice Matthew Henry’s commentary about this scripture:

“It is confirmed by the testimony of Jesus, which is the Spirit of prophecy. And this Jesus, as God, is the root of David, though, as a man, His offspring-a person in whom all uncreated and created excellencies meet too great and too good to deceive His churches and the world. He is the Fountain of all light, the Bright and Morning Star, and as such has given to His churches this morning light of prophecy, to assure them of the light of that perfect day which is approaching.”

I believe He’s God. What do you think? The bible does say He is the first and the last.

Isaiah 44:6 - “Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.” KJV

Sounds like one person to me. Let’s compare that to what Jesus said in Revelation 1:17.

Revelation 1:17 - “…Fear not; I am the first and the last.” KJV

He is the Holy One of Israel! Let’s talk about the Savior and the Holy One next week.

Is anyone getting anything out of this? Or should I change to another subject? I’d love to hear back from about 2,000 of you!
